Community detection: Topological vs. topical

چکیده

The evolution of the Web has promoted a growing interest in social network analysis, such as community detection. Among many different community detection approaches, there are two kinds that we want to address: one considers the graph structure of the network (topology-based community detection approach); the other one takes the textual information of the network nodes into consideration (topic-based community detection approach). This paper conducted systematic analysis of applying a topology-based community detection approach and a topic-based community detection approach to the coauthorship networks of the information retrieval area and found that: 1) Communities detected by the topology-based community detection approach tend to contain different topics within each community; and 2) Communities detected by the topic-based community detection approach tend to contain topologicallydiverse sub-communities within each community. The future community detection approaches should not only emphasize the relationship between communities and topics, but also consider the dynamic changes of communities and topics.

Community Topical "Fingerprint" Analysis Based on Social Semantic Networks

Community analysis of social networks is a widely used technique in many fields. There have been many studies on community detection where the detected communities are attached to a single topic. However, an overall topical analysis for a community is required since community members are often concerned with multiple topics. In this paper, we propose a semantic method to analyze the topical com...

Multi-scale detection of hierarchical community architecture in structural and functional brain networks

Community detection algorithms have been widely used to study the organization of complex systems like the brain, which can be represented as graphs or networks of nodes (brain regions) connected by edges (functional or structural connections). A principal appeal of these techniques is their ability to identify a partition of brain regions (or nodes) into clusters (or communities), where nodes ...

Comparative Evaluation of Community Detection Algorithms: A Topological Approach

Community detection is one of the most active fields in complex networks analysis, due to its potential value in practical applications. Many works inspired by different paradigms are devoted to the development of algorithmic solutions allowing to reveal the network structure in such cohesive subgroups. Comparative studies reported in the literature usually rely on a performance measure conside...

Risk of acquired methemoglobinemia with different topical anesthetics during endoscopic procedures

INTRODUCTION Methemoglobinemia is a recognized complication of the use of topical anesthetic sprays. The true scope of the problem or the risk with different topical anesthetic sprays and endoscopic procedures is unknown. METHODS We retrospectively identified all cases of methemoglobinemia that occurred in a university affiliated community hospital from 2001 to 2007. RESULTS Eleven cases of...

Evaluation of Topical Tranexamic Acid on Intraoperative Bleeding in Endoscopic Sinus Surgery

Tranexamic acid (TA) is an antifibrinolytic agent which reduces bleeding following certain surgical procedures. The present study was performed on 56 patients, scheduled for elective endoscopic sinus surgery under general anesthesia, to examine the effects of topical TA on providing a bloodless surgical field and evaluate the bleeding volume. The study comprised 26 patients who received topical...
